Why I moved to mataroa.blog?

Normally, I like designing my own website, adding small things and doing small experience with it. I always felt like it's my own small garden.

While ago, I was using my own website, which is Hugo, editing markdown files, building own my local export and uploading via amazing tool called rsync to my Debian server. It was good but I had couple problems on this process.

Mobile Friendly

Like it or not, everyone using smartphones these days. It's very convenient a lot of way, can make our life easier.

Last couple months, I noticed that I am mostly writing whenever I am not using my laptop. Mostly when I am in outside, while waiting something or in hospital. And those times, I had only my phone + notebook. Thats why whatever I am gonna use, it should have a mobile friendliness.

Of course I can write it, edit it, use termux to deploy, or write it and save, whenever go back home deploy via my computer but I have more reasons to go on.

Price Wise

Paying my VPS: $36/year Paying mataroe: $9/year (actually I didn't even need to pay extra, everything on free plan works great for my case)

Yes, I can host a lot of website, API and more with my VPS but currently I am in bad spot on financially. I had to take care of my mom's sickness and that is means everyday extra $$. Even couple times I forgot to pay my monthly VPS bill and my server got erased. Which means I need to setup again, which means another 1-2 hours of work...

I like supporting others

When I started researching which blog platform works for me, I specially look for those criterias:

  • minimalist ui/ux
  • care about privacy
  • lightweight
  • open source
  • yearly plan, less than $20

After checking every platforms, I had two winners:

  • Bearblog.dev
  • mataroa.blog

And in my opinion, mataroa making better job, even it's un-sexy looking, but at least doing one thing, which is serving my horrible blog posts I guess :)
